File: aaalm_03.txtEXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COVER BRIEF MEMORANDUM FOR USCENTAF/DEH THROUGH: HQ AFESC/DEH FROM: Lt Col [(b-2)] PURPOSE: An analysis of conditions in extreme heat climates with recommendations for sustainability of forces while conducting desert operations. DISCUSS ION: U S Forces have had limited experience in desert operations. The guidance and suggestions presented draw heavily on knowledge gained by Natick in laboratory and field studies, information obtained from contacts in other countries, and observations made by institute personnel who have accompanied troops deployed to desert environments for training and readiness exercises. RECOMMENDATION Command responsibility and emphasis are key to prevention and minimization of heat injury. Commanders should be aware that their major weapons against heat illness and injury are adequate rest, careful management of work-rest cycles, and regular water consumption. Atch 2
