THE AOR.  THE FOLLOWING PROVIDES THE CORRECT INFORMATION REGARDING
THIS SUBJECT.  HEAVY SAND CLOUDS CONFINED TO THE EASTERN PROVINCES OF
SAUDI ARABIA, PRIMARILY DHAHRAN, MAY POTENTIALLY CAUSE EARLY
UNSCHEDULED ENGINE REMOVALS (UER) ON THE F100-100/-200 ENGINES WITH
THE 1800 CYCLE CONFIGURATION CORES (NO PROBLEM WITH THE F100-220
ENGINES OR 4000 CYCLE CONFIGURATION F100-100/-200).  SA-ALC

ANTICIPATES UER'S APPROXIMATELY 400 CYCLES EARLIER THAN THE NORMAL
SCHEDULED DEPOT INTERVAL AND IS TAKING ACTION TO SUPPORT THESE
ANTICIPATED EARLIER RETURNS.  AS HIGH PRESSURE TURBINE BLADES AND
VANES REACH 2000 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, THE SAND BEGINS TO STICK AND
BUILD-UP ON THE AIRFOILS CAUSING EARLY DETERIORATION DUE TO FLAKING
OF THE AIRFOIL COATING.  TO DATE, 21 ENGINES HAVE BEEN INSPECTED AT
HAHN WITH NO SIGNIFICANT SAND-CAUSED DISTRESS OBSERVED ON EITHER
THE 1800 CYCLE OR 4000 CYCLE CORE.  THE DEPOT MAINTENANCE FACILITY AT
SA-ALC IS THOROUGHLY INSPECTING MODULES RETURNING FROM DESERT SHIELD
UNITS.  BASED ON DATA GATHERED DURING THESE INSPECTIONS, SA-ALC WILL
DETERMINE IF ANY FIELD INSPECTION LIMITS NEED TO BE CHANGED.  THIS
INFORMATION MAY BE A CONSIDERATION REGARDING FUTURE BASING LOCATIONS,
TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE SAND PROBLEM IN THE EASTERN PROVINCES THAT
IMPACT THE 1800 CYCLE CORE F100-100/-200 ENGINES, BUT NOT THE
UPGRADED (4000 CYCLE CORE) F100-100/-200 ENGINES OR THE F100-220.
3.	C-130 PROPELLERS.  WE ARE CURRENTLY SURGING 180 PROPS AT
6/DAY;  EXPECT NO FURTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS ITEM.
