                                                        OPERATION DESERT SHIELD/STORM
                                                               LESSONS LEARNED
                                                          1st Services Squadron/SVF

            1. OPR: [(b)(2)]

            2. Name of Contingency; DESERT SHIELD/STORM.

            3. Key Words: Cold Storage.

            4. Title: Food Service.

            5. Observation: Not enough 150-cubic foot refrigerator for
            storage.

            6. Discussion: Normally, there are 6 or 8 reefer boxes per 9-1
Kitchen. We found that of the 8 boxes we eventually obtained,
more than half remained inoperative due to lack of spare parts.
There was never enough cold storage to keep our perishable
            rations chilled or frozen.

            7. Lesson Learned: The need for efficient reefer space is
            critical to efficient kitchen operations.

            8. Recommendation: Recommend required reefer boxes be
prepositioned with each 9-1 Kitchen and "tripped together during
deployments. Also recommend spare parts be available for repair.

            9. Area: Food Service
