            PERSONNEL CATEGORY
PERSONNEL ISSUE NO. 15 Pyridostigmine Side Effects
            (SGHR ITEM NO. 232)

DISCUSSION: Cases of side effects were reported for personnel taking
pyridostigmine tablets. Empirical evidence (i.e.; qualitative clinical
experience during the deployment) suggests that side effects did occur but were
generally mild and not incapacitating. Some evidence suggests that individuals
stopped taking the drug early or a variety of reasons.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Question of risks v. benefits of use should be re-addressed
by appropriate pharmacology and toxicology experts at the tri-service level
        employing scientific prospective analysis.

ACTIONS REQUIRED: Evaluate risks v. benefits of pyridostigmine tablets ,
        regarding future use.

ACTIONS COMPLETED: Noted. Notwithstanding side effects, pyridostigmine
tablets will be used in future contingencies where the threat warrants until a
        more effective substitute is developed.
        STATUS: Closed.
