           5. Survey the inside of the tank for DU contamination with
           an AN/PDR-54, AN/PDR-60, AN/PDR-56F radiae meter (IM-16OF
/PDR-56) and its accompanying radiac probe (DT-224B/PDR-56F
[main probe]), or an equivalent instrument if the interior of
the tank is dry. The probe must be held as close to the
surface as possible without coming in contact. However, if
the surface being surveyed is wet or covered with grease or
dirt, there exist a condition of alpha self-absorption and an
AN/PDR-27 with the beta shield open, an AN/VDR-2 (IM-243
meter and DT-616 probe) or equivalent instrument, is to'be
used. If contamination levels are detected, self-recovery of
the vehicle should not be attempted. Utilize a recovery
vehicle to recover the tank to the rear decontamination area
in accordance with paragraph 14-5. If no contamination is
detected during the radiological survey of the vehicle
           interior, proceed with self-recovery.

                                     WARNING

Self-recover or recover tank to rear decontamination area, or
injury to personnel and damage to equipment may result from
exposure to Depleted Uranium (DU) contamination. If a
decontamination area has not been designated$ recover to a
position downwind of rear support with a safety perimeter of
at least 1,200 ft surrounding vehicle. Refer to TB 9-1300-
278 for radiation detection and decontamination procedures.

           6. Self-recover or recover to rear decontamination or main-
           tenance area as applicable.

           7. Decontaminate vehicle and personnel if required, and
repair following procedures in TB 9-1300-278.

           8. Record BDAR action taken. When mission is complete, or
as soon as practical, repair the equipment/system using
           applicable maintenance procedures.

                        END ADVANCE DRAFT BDAR PROCEDURES

           5. The POC is Mr. Kevin Fritz, AMSMC-HAW-VA, DSN 793-2135.
