                      world was through the

the soldiers. "Free" outgoing tft@til privileges allowed the
soldiers to write their family friends without. having to
worry about postazde, Along with the mail news was received
by radio and Stars & Stripes, Arab News, and Saudi Gazette
                      newspapers.
Two health issues were also t-Lip priorities. First,
soldiers had to acclimatize to the heat which reached over
130 degrees at times. Soldiers limited the work that they
did Juring the middle of the day and their water consumption
was closely supervised by their chain of command.
Second, sanitation quickly became a problem. Human
waste had to be burned until a waste disposal company could
be contracted to haul away the waste from the outhouse type
latrines. An additional problem was standing water which was
a breeding ground for bacteria and flies. The water from the
shower points was not draining properly. The showers were
turned off eventually to allow the standing water to
evaporate. The division had contracted for showers and they
went into operation soon after the running water showers were
                      turned off
The TF units conducted training in CEII's immediate
area from the very first days of arriving in Saudi Arabia.
Classes on desert survival, construction of shelters, day
lped
prepare the soldiers foi- the future harsh desert
