                  8) OBSERVATION: Pre-deployment actions indicated
several strengths and weaknesses for the signal
office and signal battalion. These include the
pre-packaging of signal equipment for each
                      supported unit, load plans, deployability
standards, etc. EDRE's stress and test the
deployment system. We must allocate more
training time and money to these exercises.

                  9) OBSERVATION: The satellite configuration
required 24 ID to use a 20-foot antenna dish on
the hub system. The dish has limited mobility on
rugged terrain. The Army must either use smaller
antenna dishes or protect the large dish
                      absolutely.

                  10) OBSERVATION: Telephone calls for emergency and
morale purposes are e @ cted by today'@ soldiers.
Current technology allows rapid deployment of
commercial satellite service for our troops
wherever they deploy. This service should be a
part of deployment plans when extended
                      deployments are expected.

                  11) OBSERVATION: Present 3 and 5 KW gasoline-powered
generators are inadequate and do not provide
required reliability for use in signal units.
These should be replaced with lighter, more
reliable, and more rugged diesel-powered systems.

                  12) OBSERVATION: Five ton and 2 1/2 ton trucks are
inadequate for mobility in the desert. Replace
these vehicles in the signal battalions with
HEMTT for signal shelter applications and HMMWV
                      for lighter applications.

        13) OBSERVATION: Inadequate long-range communication
systems were loaded into initial ships deploying
to Saudi Arabia. Units must receive single
channel TACSAT equipment at home station so that
the operators may be trained. The division needs
                      more of these vital assets.
