                                          PHASE VI


        Phase VI of Operation Desert Storm (The Defense of Northern Kuwait)
        started on the 28th of February when the Division occupied positions in
        Northwestern Kuwait and the temporary cease +ire was put into effect.

            Early on the morning of the lst of March, at 0215 hours, the 42D FAB
        reported their combat power status as -Follows: 1-27 FA had 21 of 27 MLRS
        operational, and both 2-29 FA and 3-20 FA hid 23 of 24 howitzers
        operational.

            Later in the morning on I March, the Commanding General, MG Funk,
        congratulated all of his units on Division Command net. In addition he
        announced some new information and expressed some concerns. The Division
        missions were to secure and protect the force and defend Northern
        I'uwait. The Division was still Linder the kjartime rules of engagement. In
        addition the Division would continue to tale prisoners and destroy enemy
        equipment. He wanted units to ensure they had 100% accountability of all
        personnel and to recognize courageous soldiers.    He wanted small unit
        actions identified and After Action Reviews (AAR) conducted. He praised
        the soldiers of the Division and now expected the leadership to provide
        the troops with hot meals, showers, and mail service. Finally, he
        announced that six 3D Armored Division sd.3iJiers were killed in action.

            The CG's guidance and the 3 915 mission was covered in detail in
        writing, FRAGO 85, the following day. FRAGO 86, dated I March 91 provided
        instructions -For subordinate units to conduct are-.a recons 4 kilometers
        from their unit positions. The CAB was tasked te conduct aerial recons.

        All indirect fires required approval by the DTOC.

            At 1423 hours the Divarty received the following message from VII
        Corps: Additional Engagement Criteria: (1) No offensive action without
        Jayhawk (VII Corps) approval. ('.) Iraqi -Forces are still considered
        hostile (3) Wartime Rules a-F Engagement (ROE) --till in effect.
        Additionally: (1) If the enemy has turrets opposite of direction of
        travel consider as trying to surrender (2) If enemy turrets pointed
        towards direction of travel consider hostile -.) Every effort will be
        given to the enemy to surrender (4) Road bloci,@ authorized to prevent
        escape of enemy equipment and personnel (5) Commanders authorized to
        take any measures necessary to protect equipment. personnel, and aircraft
        -From possible or imminent attack.

            Phase VI was characterized init4zll,.- by searches 'For War Trophies.
        Everyone was interested in taking a look at the destroyed enemy equipment
        and bunker complexes in the area. The entire area was littered with
        equipment, some damaged and some abandoned. There were numerous areas
        which contained unexploded ordnance, some of which would claim additional
