           SUBJECT:  Separate Rations for Medical conditions in Operation
           Desert Storm.                                      w

          .1. The attached request'WaS  forwarded to me for comment.
           2. Although there are  some situations where long-term
           consumption of MRE's would be undesirable, e.g. hypertension
           aggravated by the high salt content, there are few, if any,
           conditions compatible with active duty service which cannot be
           managed either by selection within the MRE's available, or by
           temporary minor medication changes for the anticipated duration
           of Operation Desert Storm.

           3.  Recommend that the MEDCOM not support requests for separate
           rations from this theater. Any soldier claiming intolerance of
           MRE's should be evaluated by the medical system for temporary
           work-around solutions or evacuation for medical board evaluation.
