SAFETY AND HEALTH PROCEDURES
FOR CA@C PAINTING OPERATIONS
1. Establish a Restricted Area
a. Personnel working inside restricted area should be required to wear
protective clothing and equipment as described below..
b. Use engineering tape to mark off an area 100 meters on either side
of the "CARC" paint spray area. Personnel on break or otherwise
not required to be in the painting area should remain outside of
the taped off area.
2. Fire Protection
Solvents used in "CARCH painting are flammable liquids.
a. Allow no smoking within restricted area.
b. No open flames or other ignition sources should be permitted inside
the restricted area.
c. Class B fire extinguishers should be readily available at painting
and mixing sites. Personnel should be trained in the operation of
these.extinguishers.
d. Assure bulk storage of paint is such that drum temperatures do not
exceed 1200F. Probably not a problem during December or January
but could be as ambient temperatures increase.
Respiratory Protection/Prot6ctive Clothing
a. High Volume Production - 100 - 200+ vehicles per day.
1) Personnel spray painting, mixing or otherwise in close proximity
to the spray painting operation should be required to wear full-
k over. garment,
gloves and foot covers.
2) Personnel within the restricted area but not working in the immed-
iate vicinity of the spraying operation should wear a full-face
air purifying respirator with appropriate canister. Tyvek outer
garment, protective gloves and foot covers.
b. Low Volume Production - Up to 50 vehicles per day
Spray painters should wear air supplied respirators. Mixers and
other ancillary personnel should wear full-face air purifying respir-
ators. All should wear Tyvek outergarments, hand protection and
foot covers.
4. Safety
Compressed air, the possibility of paint splash and sputter, falls and sprains
