          SUBJECT: Foreign Animal Disease Update
          PURPOSE: To provide update information concerning the occurrence
          of animal diseases foreign to the United States in the operation
          Desert Storm AOR


          FACTS:

          1. Foreign Animal Diseases:
               a. In the Middle East, Bahrain reported outbreaks of Foot and
          Mouth Disease (FMD) type 0 in February 1990.       Jordan reported
          outbreaks of untyped FMD between September and December 1989
          involving 477 cases.    A report in February 1990 indicated all
          isolations were type 0. Oman reported outbreaks of type 0 and Asia
          1 in November 1989. Turkey reported 19 cases of type 0 in December
          and February, with 5,644 animals exposed. FMD 0 virus has a low
          sporadic occurrence in bovine populations, although outbreaks in
          Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman have been reported during 1990.
          Disease is controlled via vaccination, quarantine, movement control
          and other precautions at the frontier and inside the country,. FMD
          is a notifiable disease.
               b. One outbreak of Rinderpest involving 7 cases was reported
          in January from the U.S.S.R.     Distribution in Saudi Arabia is
          unavailable. Disease control is via vaccination, quarantine, and
          other precautions at frontier.
               C. Oman reported 15 outbreaks of Peste des petits ruminants
          (pest of small ruminants) during January 1990.
               d.   Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia was reported in four
          African countries, and in Kuwait and Portugal.     Kuwait reported
, January and
          February 1990.
               e. Sheep and goat pox (SGP) was reported in Algeria, China,
          the Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Tunisia
          and Turkey. Kuwait reported 24 outbreaks involving 148 cases and
          exposing 4,250 animals during December 1989 through February 1990.
          Oman in October, November and December 1989. Disease is enzootic
          in ovine with control via vaccination, quarantine, and other
          precautions at the frontier and inside the country.     The caprine
          has low sporadic occurrence with disease control via treatment.
               f.   Hog Cholera was reported in the Federal Republic of
          Germany with 2 outbreaks with 38 cases during December 19@39, 16
          outbreaks involving 1,693 cases in January 1990, and 13 outbreaks
