                               INTERIM AFTER ACTION REPORT

           PART I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

           1. Mission/objectives. The mission of the 12th MED DET is (1) to
provide preventive medicine command and control for the 3rd MEDCOM
and (2) with attached units, to provide preventive medicine support
to all EAC assets. The basic objective is to minimize the DNBI
           rate from all causes.

           2. General Discussion. As defined by the very low DNBI rate for
this theater, results were highly satisfactory. The largest
remaining cause of severe injury, vehicle accidents, is outside the
           realm of preventive medicine.

The 12th MED DET carried out the usual preventive medicine
tasks, especially sanitary inspections, water supply inspections
and testing, field sanitation team training and pest survey and
control. Unanticipated special projects included making provision
for rapid assays of possibly poisoned water sources and
investigation of the Kuwait smoke and its effects and CARC painting
occupational medicine and Industrial Hygiene support.

           3. Dates, Locations and Major Participants. The 12th MED DET
arrived 10 DEC 90. The 105th MED DET arrived (under XVIII Airborne
Corps) on 12 OCT 90, was attached to us on 15 DEC 90, and departed
theater (less rear party) 26 MAR 91. The advance party of the
7!4th MED DET arrived (under XVIII Airborne Corps) on 13 AUG 90,
and its main body on 16 OCT 90. It was attached to us 15 DEC 90
 MED
DET arrived 14 Dec 90 and is scheduled to depart 13 May 91.

The location of units varied with the troop needs. The 105th
and 983rd MED DET were in the Dhahran area for the entire period.
The 714th MED DET began in the Dhahran area but displaced to KKMC.
The 12th MED DET had its headquarters in Riyadh and operating teams
in all areas (Riyadh, Dhahran, and KKMC). IAW the ARCENT
redeployment plan, the 12th MED DET will move to the Dhahran area
and return to CONUS from there.

           4. Significant Issues. Much of the time, available preventive
medicine personnel exceeded the requirements. However, there were
times, especially during mass movements when many transient camps
were being used, that the number of preventive medicine personnel
barely sufficed; the most critical need being MOS 91S.
