      SUBJECT: Laser Injuries

      4. Protection/prevention:

          a. The only real protection from LASER eye injuries is the
LASER Protective-Eq@ipment (LPE) made for this purpose. LPE
will prevent ocular injury from LASER radiation e@ tted from low
powered LASERS. Ballistic Laser Protective Spectacles (BLPS)
provide protection against ballistic fragments and standard NATO
range finders and target designators. Similar filters are
-Available in flight goggles (KG-3) spectacles.

          b. LPE protects against specific LASER hazards. It does
not preclude injury from other threat wavelengths. The tint or
color associated with LPE may degrade vision and military
performance under low light condition - dawn, dusk, night.

          C. Ordinary clear glass or plastic lenses (clear or tinted)
or protective devices will provide protection against far-
infrared (CO2) LASERS but are ineffective countermeasures to
LASERS in the near-in+rared or visible spectrum.

          d. Passive protection.

               (1) Do not look at the LASER light.

               (2) Take cover - get out of the LASER beam.

               (3) Utilize any protective gear available: LPE,
imdirect view optics, cover exposed skin.

               (4) Squinting can reduce the amount of LASER energy
      entering the eye.

          e. Active protection.

               (1) Command directed countermeasrues.

               (2) Maneuver:

               (a) Evasive action.

(bY Use of one eye or monocular optics.

               (c) Minimize use of binoculars or monocular optics.

                    Use of hardened optical systems.

               (e) Use of indirect viewing systems.

                                        2
