As the coalition air campaign was being prosecuted with great
success, ARCENT wag in the process of moving both VII Corps and
XVIII ABN Corps west to their initial Desert Storm attack
positions. During this move, both corps were highly vulnerable to
attack by enemy air. Though air superiority had been achieved, it
would have taken but few threat aircraft loaded with conventional
or chemical munitions to disrupt the upcoming ground campaign
during this vulnerable transition phase. To counter this threat,
Ilth ADA Brigade integrated the HIMAD coverages of TF 2-1 ADA in
the XVIII ABN Corps sector and-TF 8-43 ADA in the VII Corps
sector, along MSR Dodge (Tapline Road). This integrated coverage
provided forward deployed HIMAD protection over MSR Dodge (Tapline
Road)from An Nuayriyah to Hatar Al Batin and permitted freedom of
movement to both corps as they deployed west to support Operation
        Desert Storm.

Upon commencement of the ground war, brigade units attached to
XVIII ABN Corps moved swiftly into Iraqi territory, providing AD
protection to the corps as they went deep into Iraq. In addition
to providing air defense protection, they also captured vital
items of enemy equipment and took numerous prisoners of war. By
the time President Bush announced a cease fire on 28 February, the
brigade had units deployed from the east coast to the western
portion of Saudi Arabia, south to Riyadh, and north into Iraq to-
        the Euphrates River Valley.

During the nine months of Operations Desert Shield and Desert
Storm, the brigade accomplished all missions regardless of the
obstacles or difficulties involved. Along the way, many lessons
were learned and are all included in Volume II of this report.
The following section has some conclusions which were drawn from
learned. They are provided to give an overview of
the key lessons learned/recommendations that are covered in detail
in Part II of this AAR.

        4. Lessons Learned/Recommendationg.

            a. Transition from Peace to War and War to Peace/ Strategic
Deployment. The transition from peace to war for the Ilth ADA
Brigade was a protracted process that began with the invasion of
Kuwait and subsequent deployment of B/2-7 ADA (-) on 12 August
1990 and ended with the deployment of D/1-7 ADA to Tabuk on 7
February 1991. The most important areas of the transition were
strategic deployment and rear detachment operations.

The strategic deployment was extremely successful, however,
several areas were identified as needing more attention to
effectively prepare for future strategic deployments. The TPFDD
must be developed to support the various force packages directed
by higher headquarters and published early on for both air and sea
deployments. Movement constraints, weight, height, load
configuration, etc, for aircraft, ship, and rail movements must be
clearly defined and published prior to units developing load/
