information had been disseminated earlier, much of the confusion
and frustration could have been alleviated.
During Desert Shield/Desert Storm it became apparent that
there were p-poblems with the serviceability and wear-life of some
NBC equipment. First, brigade NBC personnel discovered that the
M17AI mask carrier was only good top 2-3 months of continuous wear
before straps and snaps broke or even the carrier itself tore.
The continuous wear proved too much for the present carriers
causing them to have to be replaced frequently. The brigade also
could not obtain clear out guidance on the wear-life of the
chemical protective overgarment once the carrier bag was broken.
The confusion centered on whether the suit life was determined by
the number of days out of the vapor bag,.op days of continuous
wear, This information is critical for determining when suits
need to be exchanged and for resupply requirements. These suit
life procedures need to be clearly stated in NBC manuals.
Upon alert notification, the brigade discovered that though
the battalions had the correct numbers of chemical defensive
equipment, they could not fit all soldiers because of odd sizing
problems (i.e. extra-extra small or extra-extra large). This
problem was solved thru cross leveling but the process was time
consuming. In the future, units need to ensure that they have the
proper sizes for each individ'ual assigned to the unit and supply
channels must be geared to support issuance of odd size equipment.
With most NBC FMg and TMa geared to warfighting in the
European theater, a significant effort was undertaken to reorient
the soldiers on the threat and NBC operations in a desert
environment. This was accomplished, but not without great effort
octrine, tactics, and procedures for
fighting in the desert. It is obvious that this situation needs
to be resolved in the future.
C. Joint/Coalition Command, Control, Communication, and
Interopez-ability (C3I).
Operation Desert Shield/Storm was the largest Integrated Air
Defense (IAD) operation ever. Not only were U.S. Air Defense
systems employed but those of several Coalition Forces were also
involved. The air defense forces were coordinated thru a command
and control network of various and distinct configurations in
order to insure synchronized fires, creating a synepgiatic effect
and preventing fratricide. There were aL lot of learning pains and
information sharing required in ox-der to make the IADS work. As a
result of integrating the Ilth Air Defense Artillery Brigade into
the IADS, several key operational and tactical issues/lessona
learned were identified.
Desert Shield/Desert Storm validated the requirement for Army
ADA to be able to receive an airpicture directly from an AWACS via
TADXL-A. The Ilth Brigade had recently purchased three Joint
TADIL-A Din.tribution System (JTADS) which enabled the brigade to
