          .,(Smoke capability. They are thought to possess Soviet
                                                                      (DM-11) and French toxic
             I smoke grenades/cannisters. These grenades are believed to contain anthracene.
               In addition, Iraq is known to possess the TMS-65, which is capable of making
               smoke.


               e. (U) NBC Defense Capabilities.

               (1)                     The Iraqi Armed Forces are among the best equipped in
               the Middle East. Its soldiers are issued Soviet impermeable chemical
               protective suits with protective mask, gloves, and footwear. They are also
               issued individual decontamination kits and nerve agent antidote.
               (2) \                   The Iraqi Army Chemical Corps has personnel assigned
               at each level from Army General Staff through brigade level. However, the
               exact number of personnel assigned to each headquarters is unknown. Their
               primary mission is to conduct NBC planning for all combat operations. In
               addition, they manage NBC activities for the command. Chemical defense units
               are assigned to corps, division, and brigade. Their mission is to provide
               personnel and equipment decontamination support, establish collective
               protectior, perform NBC reconnaissance, and provide NBC training. Unit
               structures are as provided:

               4. iU) CHEMICAL ATTACK INDICATORS. Indicators for a potential chemical
               attack are listed below.
               a. h                    Evidence of offensive operations by Iraqi forces is
               considered the primary indicator. Based upon analysis of the Iran/Iraq war,
               Iraq4 forces routinely  mixed chemical fires with conventional preparatory
               fires when initiating offensive operations.
