                a. Night soil is widely used as fertilizer in many parts of
          ,.he world, including the Middle East.


                b. Fruits and vegetables grown with night soil, especially

                d.   VT7 Co,@ns Dreven@@ive medicine personnel are presently
                             outbreak of @-i-ar-r-heal disease involving several
          hundred soldiers. The probable cause o4 the outbreak is leett@-ce

                     Proper handling and storage practices by food service
          Personnel are critical to avoid the possibility of further
          o@-,tbreak:&,. This is particularly important far con@lpacted
          ,-a@@ep4-ng service.

                     Per TB Nled 530, Food Service Sanitation, fruits and
          vegetables may be served raw if thoroughly-washed in clean
          potable water    and then disinfected by use 6f standard food
          service disinfectant- When food service disinfectant is not
          available,           and vegetables should be washed as above, and
          -then --asked 16P 30 minutes in a solution of one tablespoon
          household liquid bleach in one gallon of cool potable water.
          Borrowing soaking, the produce should be rinsed with po          telble
          water prior to serving-

                g. Prevntive medicine personnel       are an important resource
          -lo use @oi, advice and consultation in     food service sanitation
    matters. Units not having organic preventive medicine personnel
          should contact '.he 14th Preventive Medicine Unit, TASS 7725-002.


          3. VII CORPS POSITION: Commanders will ensure propei, handling
          and storage procedures are followed by food service personnel.
          Preventive medicine personnel should be consulted as required,
          particularly prior to new contract food service operations.
