:@,-r'[I'C,,rbat Support Hospital is cited for exceptionally meritorious service from 12
@@t;ber f990 to 10 April 1991 in support of the military operations in Saudi Arabia and
Iraq during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The 47th CSH provided quality health
care to the 24th Infantry Division and the Ist;Cavalry Division for almost three months at
Corps Support Area Pulaski. Within two weeks of arrival in theater, the 47th established
a 200 bed MUST hospital and maintained a full range of medical and surgical services,
treatir- 2795 soldiers. Over 80 surgical procedures were completed in this MUST configuration
with no major maintenance problems, an accomplishment itself in the hot and sandy desert.
The hospital continued to receive patients while the unit accepted and trained on the new
Deplovable Medical System (DEPMIDS) equipment, the only hospital to continue operations
while transitioning to a new environment. Once the DEPMEDS was operational, the 47th
continued its' fine delivery of health care thru the remainder of Desert Shield. In
preparation for Desert Storm, the 47th CSH trained with intensity and enthusiasm for its'
ii,lcoming mission. The command established a light, mobile, surgical intensive hospital
I)ackage that was capable of cross desert travel, with organic transportation, to facilitate
set-up and operational status in six hours. As the ground war began, the 47th convoyed with
tile 24th Infantry Division across open desert to Division Support Area 3, deep in Southern
iraq. The unit maintained its' pace with the division as the equipment performed without
a single failure. At the objective, the 47th established a 24 bed surgical intensive
facilitv during darkness and received combat casualties shortly thereafter. The unit
provided its usual high quality of care to soldiers and civilians on all sides of the
contest. At the close of the offensive operations, the hospital served as the forward-
most hospital in the 18th Airborne Corps area of operations. During its' time in Iraq,
the 47th also captured two EPW's as it provided security for the 2 hospitals at DSA-3.
Throughout Operation Desert Shield and Storm, the 47th continually provided the highest
quality of medical service to the soldiers and demonstrated total dedication and
professionalism during Desert Storm as patients of all kinds presented to their door.
The performance of the unit is of the highest caliber and reflects great credit on its'
iiiiit history, the officers and soldiers of the unit and the United States Army.
