above MOP? 0, PB pills were initiated because of the threat of
Iraqi retaliation to the Allied bombing campaign and the 12-16
hours required to build full protection.
The Brigade was initially very low on the priority list for
biological agent immunizations. However, once it was pointed out
to Corps Surgeon that the combat engineers were in the hazard
area as much as the combat units. our priority was raised -. This
was particularly important for the Botulinum immunizations. The
Anthrax immunization was given to Brigade units working out of
Brigade elements working along tne rlui. Personnel working out
of the Brigade TAC received both immunizations. To receive the
Botulinum serum, an individual had to sign a release form because
the serum had not been approved by the Food and Drug
Administration.
C. One of the more unusual units attached to the
Brigade was 181st Chemical Company (Decon) from the 13th COSCOM,
Fort flood. Texas. The company consisted of four decon platoons
and a headquarters element and arrived with approximately 106
personnel. The unit had shifted headquarters several times prior
and because the M12 Decontamination Apparatus is a low density
piece of equipment. the unit's operational readiness rate was
below 60%. The Brigade assisted the company in reaching an OR
rate of over 85%. The Chemical Company's mission was to provide
general support to the Corps. The Company established several
deliberate decon sites vicinity Log Base Echo to support this
mission. The Brigade Chemical Section worked with the Corps
Chemical Sect-on to establish a decon plan for l,og Base Echo.
The 181st provided the majority of this support. The 181st was
initially controlled by the Brigade Chemical Section. but was
eventually placed under control of 109th Group.
d. As a part of the 181st mission to support LOG Base
Echo, several fixed decon sites were established around LBE. The
Brigade Chemical sections designed a standard decontamination
site layout for these missions. This design was adopted by the
CorDs as the standard deliberate decon site.
e. The Brigade received Chemical Agents Monitors (CAMS)
just prior to the beginning of the air campaign. This piece of
equipment may have played a critical part chemical detection if
Iraq had used chemical agents. The equipment was used during the
denial operations to test Iraqi bunkers and munitions for
possible chemical agents. The brigade received eighteen CAMs
total. Ten of these went to 181st Chemical Company and one each
to battalions and brigade IIHC.
f. Upon initiation of ground hostilities, the Corps
established MOPP I as the minimum MOPP level north of the Saudi
boarder berm. This was maintained until the temporary cease fire
started the 28th of February. The brigade requested the Corps to
lower the MOPP level because it was felt the threat did,not exist
except for the units in contact. The Corp denied this request
