Hospital from Puerto Rico. Other critical personnel needs are
filled by National Augmentation Detachment (NAD) personnel, drawn
from as far away as Wyoming. Our unit is growing in numbers and
diversity, as members begin to arrive from all over the United
States. Members continue to be added to the unit during the next
five weeks, finally bringing our numbers to 245 with 239
authorized.
The greatest challenge is now to begin: bring 245 strangers
from all over the United States together and teach them to work as
a life-saving team. Their individual skills were formidable and
varied, the key would be in getting them to use those skills
harmoniously together. Just like an orchestra conductor faced a
complex symphony, so the command was faced with challenge of
getting everyone to play the same life-saving music.
We spend 23 days at Ft. Campbell, being readied for our
deployment to Saudi Arabia. Extensive training is provided in the
area of nuclear, biological and chemical warfare: how to recognize
this type of warfare, and how to survive in this radically
different environment. Self-protection, as well as the treatment
of contaminated casualties becomes the order of the day, and our
training is tested and retested. Chemical agent protection,
