16 January 1991
After one unforgettable night in this warehouse, we move to
the MGM Grand Hotel, a euphemism foisted upon unfurnished
apartments by the comedians at VII Corps headquarters. The
complex housed as many as 20,000 troops at any given time, and
is situated in the town of Al-Khobar, near the runways of the
Saudi International Airport at Dharan ("The largest airport in
Saudi Arabia" ... again). We have a good number of amenities there,
including phones to call back to the states, a small PX, and
catered meals served in mess halls which, until just recently,
were underground parking garages. Hot showers and flush toilets
complete our luxurious accommodations, as 30 of us stayed in each
6 room apartment. The five hours of sleep we'd had in the
previous 48 hours was starting to become insufficient, and,
hauling out our cots, we are soon asleep in this new, strange
land.
17 January 1991
At 2:00 a.iu., the roar of jet engines dramatically
increases from the airport at Dharan, about 1/2 mile away.
