We receive orders to close the hospital at 1800 hours and
pack up to prepare to move once again. Patients continue to
arrive, though, as we are the only hospital in this part of Iraq,
and the distance to both Kuwait city and Saudi preclude flight
operations. Try as we might, we simply can not close our doors
while the sick and injured are still arriving. Apparently the
word has not been passed to MEDEVAC units, for the thumping over
rotor blades continues throughout the night.

By 1300, we evacuate our last patients, and can finally
begin to close up the store. That afternoon, we have a memorial
service led by our chaplain for the two young Americans who died
in our operating room. The service also helped those of us who
took care of them as we endeavor to deal with the realities of
horror and death in war. Lights are on in camp tonight, as our
blackout conditions come to an end.
