Class IX resupply was practically non-existent +or our first 45 days in the
theater. The "Desert Express" system for combat systems did help, but the size
and quantity restrictions, limited the effectiveness of the resupply system.
Major assemblies were scarce and were micro managed by the 800th MMC and DS
level SSAS.
On 8 December, the 7th CSG main body departed from Nuernburg Airport. The
main body arrived Dhahran Airport, Saudi Arabia at 2200 hrs that evening.
On 9 December, operation cells were established by the class II/IV and IX SSAs
to consolidate customer requisitions for the 800th MMC at the Port of Dammam.
On 18 December the Group headquarters convoyed +ram the port of Dammam along
MSR Dodge (Tap Line Road) to Log Base Alpha (LBA). The convoy departed at
2100 hrs and arrived at the 2d COSCOM reception station, vicinity Log Base
Alpha, at 0600. The company bedded down for the day and departed to Tactical
Assembly Area (TAA) Thompson the following day (20 December).
On 20 December, the Group headquarters began establishing living and work
areas. On 22 December, subordinate Logistic Task Forces (LTFS) began
establishing supply points for direct support of nondivisional customers in
TAA Thompson, the TAA for Ist Armored Division. The Group was responsible for
providing general support and backup direct support to the division.
LTF 71 was responsible for establishing the Field Ration Break Point (FRBP),
fuel and water points far support of nondivisional units. The 213th Supply
and Service Battalion was responsible for providing the GS POL and dry cargo
linehaul for the divisional and nandivisional units.
On 21 December, the support operations section began developing the concept
for providing support for the nondivisional units in sector. At that time the
Group thought it was essentially under tasked because it only had to support
one division. During previous exercises the Group supported two divisions and
an armored cavalry regiment. A month later the Group would be tasked to
support these additional units.
The bulk of the planning fell on the supply and services branch, since the
majority of the issues were in these areas. There were several problems that
continued to exist in mission sustainfnent due to mission equipment shortages.
These shortages continued to exist until the end of January 1991.
The problems, which hindered the Group the most, were in the areas of ASL
replenishment, water production and distribution of supplies, particularly
fuel .
ASL replenishment was slow starting. There was not a large enough General
Support Supply Base (GSSB) to support all VII Corps units arriving in country.
Thi, problem was further compounded by the excessive Order Ship Times (OST)
and limited amount a+ Class IX ALOC. The ALOC, that did arrive in country, was
not always distributed to the correct location because the GSSB breaking the
pallets did not know where the addressee was located. The ALOC pallets, along
with numerous milvans, were then shipped to the SSSB at Log Base Alpha. These
items were sometimes lost in the shuffle or just placed in stock. It was not
