      MEMORANDUM FOR MSC AND SEPARATE BATTALION COMMANDERS

      SUBJECT: Flame Trench Demonstration



      1. PURPOSE: The purpose of this memorandum is to provide
      information concerning 24th ID(M)'s flame trench demonstration.

      2.  GENERAL:

          Date3 5 January 1991 [contingent upon delivery of crude oil3
          Time: 1200-1500 hrs.
          Place: Faysal Range (TL313142)
          Participating Units: 5th Engineer Battalion and 467th Fire
      Fighting Platoon.
          Uniform/Equipment: Kevlar Helmet, LCE, Protective Mask,
      Sunglasses or Dust Goggles, Body armor (optional) , Binoculars
      (optional)
          Tactical Scenario: Fire fighting platoon attempts to contain
      the fire in a portion of the trench or extinguish the entire 50
      meter trench, to permit the approach of breaching equipment.

      3.  Objectives of this exjfer%ise are to assess the effects of the
      fumes, smoke and heat; measure the temperature of the flames
      at various distances from the trench;  evaluate effectiveness of
      fire fighting equipment against oil fires. All brigade and
      battalion commanders are strongly encouraged to attend.  Attendance
      is mandatory +or all engineer              nders.
