Dear General Luck,
It is with the utmost gratitude that we thank you for supporting our
efforts to help our men and women in the armed services of Operation
Desert Shield. Having them visit in our homes is a pleasure beyond
description. As best as we can research, the last time an organized but
unsanctioned group of American civilians in a military theater of
operation was allowed to mingle with and provide aid to the troops was
in the American Civil War. We feel privileged to be in the unique
position of not having to belong to the Red Cross, USO, or any other
such organization in order to fraternize with our soldiers in Saudi
Arabia. It is unfortunate that we do not have enough families here to
allow a visit by every man and women in the operation; however, we
will try.
Your staff with whom we have coordinated, both past and present,
have been phenomena]. Major Ken Schultz, Major Jim Houston, Major
Carl Nelson, Captain Darryl Robinson, and Captain Dan Snyder have
shown dynamic and energetic dedication to the welfare of the TJS Army
personnel in Operation Desert Shield. They have made us feel that we
are the most important people in the world and our mission to provide
family comfort to their fellow service personnel is the priority mission
of Desert Shield. We become a little frustrated because they have
become close friends yet we are unable to show them the same
hospitality as we do the people who can come to our homes. They
continue to work tirelessly to coordinate the dissemination of troops to
all of the various groups of expatriots and rarely, if ever, take time off.
We understand this and will wait patiently for the time that we can
display our sentiment for them. If we had a medal, we would award it
to them.
It is not only the programs which entertain the troops in our homes
for which we are thankful to you. Allowing us to visit the soldiers in
the field is another thing for which we are indebted. 'G'ener@l, it is not
only the troops who appreciate the visits of the 'Desert Dogs.' It is
delightful to experience the immediate acceptance and camaraderie of
the soldiers; it is like visiting long lost family. We recognize the
patience that the field commanders must have to allow us to disrupt
their military activities, frequently with no notice.
We comprehend, probably more than anyone else in the world, the
hardships all of you are experiencing. We also recognize the not-so-
obvious career risks which you face as a member of the U. S. military
general staff by allowing civilians to mingle with armed troops around
fully functional military hardware in the field. Transporting the troops
and entrusting them to a group of non-military people is another act of
faith and risk to yourself. Sir, please believe us when we say that you
and your fellow generals who have allowed your people to fraternize
