               ISSUE: NBC s

DISCUSSION: The NBC markl"n@ system organic to the FOX (NBCRS) is
.inadequate in.a desert. environment.' These. markers work fine when they are
used on roads because they a@e easily sported '@ however, these marking flags -
are much too small to be noticed in the eypanse openness of a desert. Using
the markers at night presents another proh@lem because the luminous strips on
the marker balls cannot be easily seen from very far distance's.

RECOMMENDATION: Another marking-system must be devised for
marking on open terrain. A larger version of the one presently in use-would
.work fine. The color of the marking balls must be a contrasting color in the
desert.so they can also be s---en easier. ilor night operations one can tie a
ch'emlight on the marking pole to'.ensure that the markers are seen from greater
  distances.
