I, ake the following statement under oath: On 4
Dec 1990, my crew and myself were participating in a 2d Bde CFX. The
operation included a tactical movement of some 30-40 Km's. During the
exercise my vehicle operated fine until about 050130 Nov. While moving
as part of a Task Force movement, my vehicle experienced a.loss of power
and would not keep up with the rest of the elements. In order to
continue the mission, I called forward my XO and maintenance team,
instructing the rest of my company's elements to continue on. The
maintenance team looked at my tank (A66 3/69 Ar) while went on in A65.
We were searching for the rest of the task force when my gunner called
from A66 to say the tank was mobile again and he was falling behind the
Task Force TOC to catch up. This was about 10 minutes after we left A66.
We had no success in finding the main body of the task force so we linked
up with the TOC also to get our position. They were also looking for the
Task Force. After about 10 minutes I decided to move out and locate the
main body of the Task Force. Since my tank (A66) was apparently running,
I went back over to it to go. We started the engine but the transmission
would not shift into forward. I had my maintenance team loo at it again
as I went back toja5. The rest of the vehicles there, (TOC, MEDIC, A65,
A14, A Fuel HEMM=moved out to locate the Task Force. I told my crew
and maintenance team I'd be back for them as soon as we could. This was
about 0300 on 5 Dec. The &&eration continued and eventually all Task
Force elements were direcfWRMack to an Assembly Area. After we closed
there, I borrowed a HUMMV to go find my tank and maintenance crew. We
found them about 0900. I talked to the maintenance crew who said they'd
checked out the vehicle and cooled down the transmission. They suggested
a test drive which we conducted and the vehicle operated fine. We
continued our movement back to the Task Force Assembly Area without
incident. The crew pulled operator PMCS and after operations maintenance
in preparation for future operations. We had pulled into the Assembly
Area about 1130 hrs. I received a warning order to move at 1500 and
informed my crew and the rest of the company. After talking with my
maintenance team and crew, I decided to continue on in my tank (A66) to
get it out of the maneuver area and back to our company Assembly Area
where the rest of my maintenance team could look at it. We began our
movement at 051500 Dec with the vehicle working fine. Towards the end of
our movement as we were closing on the Task Force Assembly Area and
refuel, point, my driver experienced a gradual loss of power but we were
still able to maintain our speed and position within the march unit. As
we pulled into the refuel point, I radioed my XO and told him I was by
passing fuel. I decided to take my vehicle directly back to my CO
Assembly Area where the rest of my maintenance assets were so they could
diagnose it. Also, since the previous time at 050300 Dec the vehicle
refused to shift into forward after stopping, I didn't want my vehicle
blocking the refuel point if it did it again. As we neared the company
Assembly Area, the vehicle power loss became more evident. We entered
the Assembly Area and proceeded_,Lpwards the maintenance area when the
vehicle came to a complete hal-i@and the engine stopped. I grabbed my
gear to dismount the vehicle and instructed my gunner to get my
maintenance team chief to look at A66. I went into my
