It is recommended that personnel be prudent in their contact
with all domestic and wild animals. General guidance for the
management of animal bites is found in NAVMEDCOMINST 6220.4, 0
"Rabies Prevention and Control." If there are any Questions,
bites of any kind should be reported promptly to local public
health authorities and/or to NEPMU-7. It is adviseable to have
Human diploid cell rabies vaccine (HDVC) and rabies immune
globulin (RIG) for post-exposure treatment should it be indicat-
         ed.

         11. Other Health Considerations

Low risk. Schistosoma haematobium is endemic in the follow-
ing areas: northeast in the Bolikh River Basin from the town of
Tall Al Abyd to Ar Raqqau; in the governate of Raqqah; the
Jaghjachah, Jarah, Sublak and Ramila River systems, their
tributaries and canals in the governate of Hasadah; the river
Euphrates from the areas of Ar Raqqah to the Syrian border,
including its tributaries (Khabur and Bolikh). Exposure to
freshwater impoundments should be avoided, or, if impossible,
         minimized.

Meningococcal meningitis is endemic in Syria, and a current
(believed Group A) countrywide epidemic has resulted in many
cases in Damascus during early 1989, the largest reported
outbreak in recent years. meningitis immunization is recommended
only for individuals unable to avoid prolonged contact with the
         local population.

         12. Climate Considerations

Terrain is primarily semi-arid and desert plain; narrow
coastal plain; mountains in the west. A Mediterranean climate
exists along the northern coast and seaward slopes of coastal
mountains. The remainder of the country is desert hot, semi-arid
and dusty. Adequate fluids, eye and skin protection are recora-
         mended.
