unclear. A recent report (Jan 88) indicated that rabies poses a
serious threat throughout the Y.A.R. It is unclear whether the
more than 300 cases reported annually were all human cases. Risk
should be considered for all urban and rural areas. It is
recommended that personnel be prudent in their contact with all
domestic and wild animals. General guidance for the management
of animal bites is found in NAVMEDCOMINST 6220.4, "Rabies
Prevention and Control." If there are any questions, bites of
any kind should be reported promptly to local public health
authorities and/or to NEPMU-7. It is adviscable to have Human
diploid cell rabies vaccine (HDVC) and rabies immune globulin
(RIG) for post-exposure treatment should it be indicated.

            11. Other Health Considerations

Low risk of Schistosoriiasis. Both Schistosoma mansoni and S.
haematobium are present. Historically S. mansoni is found in the
foothills and highlands, and S. haematobi= is found in the
foothills. schistosomiasis is a serious prblic health problem in
the Y.A.R., with a reported annual incidence of more than 40,000
cases. Areas with irrigation canals and/or wadis can be expected
to be involved. Exposure to freshwater impoundments should be
            avoided or, if impossible, minimized.

            12. Climate Considerations

Terrain is narrow coastal plain (Tibana), western mountains,
flat dissected plain in center sloping into desert of Arabian
peninsula. High temperature and humidity are common along the
coast with little seasonal variability. The interior desert is
hot and dry subject to sand and dust storms in the summer.
Extreme cold conditions are not a problem except in the highest
luids, eye and skin protection are
            recommended.
