         DESERT SHIELD SURVEILLANCE CASE DEFINITIONS

         HEAT INJURY - ANY systemic heat related symptoms requiring tx

               Includes dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat
               stroke. Does NOT include sunburn

         DIARRHEA / GI - Focuses on INFECTIOUS CAUSES of symptoms

               Includes diarrhea, gastroenteritis, dysentery, food poisoning,
               abdominal pain, appenditicitis, nausea/vomiting without other
               cause. Does NOT include GI bleeding, hemorrhoids, ulcers or
               other NON-INFECTIOUS diagnoses.

         DERMATOLOGIC - All skin conditions presenting for medical eval

               Includes fungal or bacterial infection, cellulitis, heat rash,
               blisters. Also includes SUNBURN

         RESPIRATORY - All upper and lower respiratory complaints

               Includes URI, pharyngitis, rhinitis, allergic rhinitis,
               bronchitis, pneumonia, cough, bronchospasm, wheezing, asthma,
               and any other allergic or infectious respiratory complaint.
               Also includes secondary complications of respiratory symptoms,
               such as otitis media and sinusitis.     i

         INJURY / ORTHO - All musculaskeletal and soft-tissue complaints

               Includes   lacerations,   abrasions,    contusions,    sprains,
               dislocations, fractures, muscle pulls, or other acute injuries
               (except eye injury) . Specifically includes head injury. Also
               includes   chronic   musculoskeletal    conditions    such    as
               chondronalacia, tendonitis, bursitis, back pain, neck pain,
               etc.

         OPHTHAIMOLOGICAL - Eye infections, injuries, vision problems

               Includes conjunctivitis, keratitis, sty, corneal abrasion,
               foreign body, other eye trauma. Also includes visual problems

         PSYCHIATRIC - All psychological or psychiatric complaints

sonality disorder, pyschosis,
               or any other mental health complaint

         Unexplained FEVER - Temperature of 101 or greater for 24 hours
         without clear-cut etiology.

         MISCELLANEOUS MEDICAL - All other complaints presenting to sick
         call not fitting above categories.

               Includes headache, hypertension, chest pain, ulcers, GI
               bleeding, angina, MI, hemorrhoids, ingrown toenails, etc.
