              1. Enclosure (1) is forwarded as a matter of possible interest.

              2. By mid January, the Navy had recalled more than 5,000 medical
              Selected Reserve (SEIRES) personnel in support of Operation Desert
              Shield. This research memorandum examines the recall of medical SEIRES
              personnel to replace deployed active-duty personnel and to meet theater
              requirements. An additional document will trace the medical recall
              through the end of Desert Storm.
