                 Training

Like other SELRES personnel, medical reservists meet training re-
quirements through monthly drills, known more formally as inactive duty
for training (IDT), and through annual training for two weeks per year
of full-time duty. Most nonmedical reservists drill on weekends in
four-hour increments at a reserve center, readiness center, or an air
                 site.

A structured approach to drilling is not always well suited for
medical personnel and units. First, mobilization training for medical
reservists has a clinical component. MTFs and DTFs provide the clinical
setting for mobilization training. Second, reduced staffing at NTFs and
s the training effectiveness of such drills.
As a result, medical reservists a-re encouraged to take advantage of
                 drill flexibility. '

Drill flexibility is the use of authorized drill periods in various
multiples of time to enhance mutual support, training, and retention.
Instead of scheduling two four-hour drill periods on Saturday and two on
Sunday, reservists may elect to schedule two drills on one day every
other week. Drill flexibility is available to all SELRES personnel in
all programs. However, several programs unique to the medical reserve
offer greater opportunity to use drill flexibility.
