themselves for how long they must w?iit before being reunited
with their families. This contributed to shared feelings of
anger, helplessness, and lack of control.
Lack of information
The ship had very limited communication with the
outside world. BBC broadcasts were sketchy and did not
satisfy the crawls insatiable appetite for information.
There was one telephone onboard ship and it was only
available for true emergencies. Mail was the primary link
with home but delivery was sporadic and unpredictable.
News was a precious commodity. initially, news
broadcasts were heard only via shortwave radios. The BBC
broadcasts drew nightly huddle groups on the flight deck.
Rumors, however, seemed to have more credibility than fact,
filling the void left by the lack of information. The crew
wanted overhead announcements by the Commanding officer and
opportunities to pose questions to the Captain. People
believed that someone really know what was going on, but was
unwilling to share the information.
The public affairs officer began to publish a 2 page
daily summary of world events which was read with tremendous
interest. After the war began, one crew member discovered
that the ship could receive CNN using a simple antenna.
