These movies provided an escape to. a world that appeared to

make sense. The operating room group never mixed thoroughly

              with the officer's lounge group.

                              Prevention and consultation

"For me, the 'most frustrating part of the whole

experience was trying to make people understand that I was

not really interested in recounting the various types and

numbers of psychiatric casualties that I saw, but, rather in

emphasizing my discovery of the true role of the military

psychiatrist - that of prevention. How do you quantify this

aspect of your work" (O'Connell, 1986)? The role of the

psychiatrist on a ship in a war zone is radically different

than that of a colleague practicing in an office in a

peaceful setting. Primary prevention through consultation

to community leaders and commanders, including education and

early identification of at risk individuals are critical

functions of the psychiatrist at sea. Secondary prevention

through crisis intervention and initial stabilization of

patients are also critical functions for the psychiatrist.

These concepts are the basis of care for patients and

communities facing the stresses of war trauma (Glass, 1955).'
