psychiatric admissions. Six of these patients were

evacuated to await medical discharge from the Navy, and 11

were returned to duty. Of the 11 returned to duty, six were

later returned to the United States because they were found

unsuitable for further service on the basis of poor

performance. The 12 crew members who left the ship after a

psychiatric admission represented one percent of the shipts

             crew.

             Disaster Consultation and Debriefing

on several occasions the mental health team deployed to

provide consultation when accidents or disasters occurred.

These consultations were important and tested the resolve of

the team. One of the tenets of combat psychiatry is that

mental health workers should be available for travel to the

front lines to provide assistance and consultation. In

practice this is difficult because it requires that mental

health workers abandon the relatively protected hospital

environment and travel to an unknown and potentially hostile

environment. In addition, workers must serve as

consultants, planners, teachers, and advocates. Verbal

skills and one's power of persuasion become critically

important and must be combined with a clear understanding of

military mission priorities (Mateczun, in press).
