I. The Logistics Challenge
A. Logistics support of Operation DESERT SHIELD is
challenging the U.S. Army logistics system as it has not
been challenged in recent history. Already the first ninety
days of DESERT SHIELD have far surpassed similar periods of
initial build-up during World War II, Korea,. a~d Viet Nam,
in terms of troops transported and tonnages shipped into an
overseas area of operation (AOR). DESERT SHIELD represents
the farthest and most rapid build-up of forces in our
nation's history. The ongoing mobilization and deployment
of forces, the long air and sea lines of communication, the
harsh operational environment of the Southwest Asian desert,
and the extended duration of the deployment present a
formidable sustainment challenge for deployed forces.
B. The purpose of this brochure is to provide
deploying units with an overview of how the logistical
challenge is being met. The brochure offers a description
of the current theater combat service support structure at
echelons above corps and corps, a discussion of lessons
noted in the earlier deployment of units to Southwest Asia
(SWA), and a compilation of some of the key message traffic
and reference data containing deployment guidance and
logistics information on operating in the SWA environment.
