                                       UNCLASSIFIED
       -I.-' Mobilization.
           A. Discussion. Headquarters battalion with it's battalion aid
station was deployed to Southwest Asia in three waves, an advance
element, a main body and a follow on element. A major focus of ef-
fect prior to deployment was medical readiness. Pre-deployment
medical readiness issues included, administration of routine and
special immunizations, requisitioning eyewear, medical and dental re-
cord mount-out, training for medical and non-medical personnel,
prescribing a six month supply of medication for those members with
conditions requiring chronic medication, i.e. hypertension, thyroid
disease, asthma, ect. and identification of medically non-deployable
and potential non-deployable personnel. Additional issues were
supply and embarkation, and personnel administrative matters. One
635 and two 636 AMALs with limited narcotics were receipted and
       mounted-out.

           B. Pre-deployment. At the onset of Operation Desert Storm
reassignment of medical personnel took place within 2d Marine
Division to meet staffing requirements for deploying battalions. We
also incurred staffing reductions to support this need.
Subsequential losses include administrative discharges, expiration of
active obligated service, and permanent change of station orders.
Personnel requirements for this operation significantly increased,
resulting in a large influx of reservists called to active duty.
This impacted significantly on the aid station's workload which
already was being severely taxed by personnel reductions, deployment
preparations already in process and commitments to support training
evolutions within the battalion coupled with being tasked to provide
on-going support for the various training phrases being provided to
nnel reporting to 2d Marine Division. This
lead the SMDR to request from the office of the Division Surgeon that
any available corpsmen, regardless of time left on station be
temporarily assigned to work within the aid station to assist with
processing of newly reporting personnel and to assist with meeting
daily operational requirements. Assistance was provided as available
pending assignment of permanent medical personnel. At one point
corpsmen slated as replacements for the 4th MEB were made available
to the aid station on a daily basis until their flight schedule was
finalized. Subsequently permanent assigned personnel filtered in
bringing the aid station up to T/O prior to departure.

               1. Medical readiness of reserves attached to Headquarters
Battalion. Hundreds of reservists reported to the battalion with
inadequate immunizations. A few reported in with fractures,
hernias and psychiatric problems. We were able to bring these
reservists to a medical ready state. However this caused a
tremendous strain on available medical resources at Camp Lejeune.

               2. Difficulty in ensuring mobilization of individual
medical and dental records were experienced. The basis of the
problem'was associated with inaccurate alpha rosters.
