NARRATIVE SUMMARY
Command, Operations and Training
Third Battalion, 12th Marines arrived in Saudi Arabia on 13
January with Headquarters Battery, Battery B, let Bn, 10th Ma-
rines and Battery F, 2nd Bn, 10th Marines. The battalion advance
party which had been in country since September and Battery I,
3rd Bn, 14th Marines who arrived early in January joined the Bn
and began calibrating and test firing weapons at Devil Dog Range.
During the air campaign, vigorous CPX training was conducted,
with additional training in day and night battalion movements,
casualty handling procedures, and intensive NBC training. Con-
currently, liaison was also made with 4th Marines and llth Ma-
rines. The enemy situation wag obtained and intelligence dissem-
ination and reporting procedures were established.
A battalion movement order was prepared and on 26 Jan, the
battalion moved to a position south of Tanajib airfield as part
of Operation Desert Storm to defend against a possible Iraqi
attack- It was during this time that the Iraqi's made a bold
attack across the border to take Al Khafji. Training continued
in conjunction with 4th Marines (Task Force Grizzly) and llth
Marines as well as within the battalion on NBC defense, mass
casualty treatment, EPW handling, local security, fire direction
operations, gunline procedures and convoy tactics.
On I February, the battalion conducted a night move to press-
sembly area positions in vicinity of Al Qarrah to support 4th
Marines in defending the airfield. At the airfield was 4th
Marines consisting of 2/7, 3/7, and 1/25. The rest of the Divi-
sion emplaced during the following week. A Q-36 counterbattery
direct support of the battalion by Ilth
Marines. This movement covered a distance in excess of 100 miles
and put the battalion on the right flank of let MarDiv (this
displacement of the battalion in mass took 18 hours). The area
the battalion occupied was extremely flat in all directions as
far as the eye could see and required navigating with electronic
means (PLRS, OPS, and PADS). Position hardening by engineers was
accomplished because of the threat of an enemy spoiling attack
and the threat of enemy long range artillery and rocket fires.
While in this position the battalion was assigned the mission to
support 5th Bn, llth Marines for an artillery raid on Iraqi SCUD
storage sites in Kuwait. The following day the battalion re-
ceived a warning order to be prepared to conduct an artillery
raid. A Battalion Raid SOP was prepared and a few days later the
battalion moved forward to conduct a night artillery raid under
zero visibility conditions. The mission of this raid was to
provide fire support to let Recon Bn which was tasked to conduct
a cross border raid/ambush on an enemy police post suspected by
intelligence to be used as an Iraqi surveillance site. We posi-
tioned Battery F,
