            15eO on 9 FEB when Sth Marines took responsibility fo- and command of
            the sector. Third battalion, 23d Marines (motorized) relieved 2d
            Battalion, 2d Marines (attached to 6th Marines) in the western half
            of the regimental main defensive area and 2d Battalion, 4th Marines
            (mechanized) relieved lst Battalion, 6th Marines along the eastern
            half of Sth Marines defensive area. Second LAI Bn and Co B, 2d Recon
            Bn were assigned screening missions forward of the infantry
            battalions' positions. Second Tank Bn was the Regimental reserve and
            counter attack force. First Battalion, 8th Marine; (mechanized) was
            attached to 6th Marines on 8 FEB 91 in preparation for their G-Day
            breaching operations.
                 On the evening of 9 FEB 91, four Iraqi 'line crosserEO
            surrendered to screening units of 2d LAI Bn and were turned over to
            Sth Marines Interrogator/Translator Team (ITT).
                 Due to the large distances between units, a regimental radio
            relay team was established in the center of the area (vic OS 930465)
            to assist in relaying radio traffic.
                 In response to reports of repeated.night time flights by Iraqi
            helicopters in the "Kuwaiti National Forest"area, on 11 and 12 FEB
            91, 2d MARDIV stationed a team from 2d LAAD Bn on the Saudi berm,
            equipped with night capable 'Stingers". Although this team returned
            without engaging any targets, this was believed to be the first
            combat deployment of the new night capable system.
                 On the morning of 12 FEB 91, 3d Bn, 10th Mar (direct support to
            Sth Mar) displaced forward and conducted an artillery raid on a
            suspected Iraqi Brigade Command Post in the area of the *Kuwaiti
06ee(c) to 0630(C). No
            bomb damage assessment (BDA) was available. Iraqi artillery made a
            limited counter battery response, firing approximately 10 ICM shells,
            without effect. This was the first SIIELREP submitted in the 2d
            MARDIV and the first known use of ICM by Iraqi forces in the war.
                 On 12 FEB 91, 2d LAI Bn was reassigned missions to the western
            Kuwait border by 2d MARDIV. Co F(-) 2d LAI remained in direct
            support of 8th Marines and continued the screening mission fo- the
            duration of 8th Marines operations in the area. On 14 FEB 91, Ist
            Force Recon Co(-)(REIN) began Operaticrn 'CLOUSEAU', a 4 day
            reconnaissance of the Kuwaiti National Forest area (refer to
            FragO-7-91).
                 On 13 FEB 91, six more Iraqi 'line crosse-s' surrendered.
            Eighth Marines participated in 2d MARDIV passage of lines brief and
            Tactical Exercise Without Troops (TEWT).
                 On 14 FEB 91 Task Force TROY, a small group of I MEF personnel,
            task organized for deception operations along the southern Kuwait
            border, made liaison visits in preparation for operations starting on
            18 FEB 91. Deception operations and repositioning continued throught
            this period in order to deceive the Iraqis as to the point of main
            effort and intentions.
                 Second Tank Bn was reassigned from direct support of Oth Marines
            back to general support to the division on 14 FEB 91 and repositioned
            to the Final Tactical Asembly Area on the western Kuwait border.
                On the morning of 15 FEB 91 a 5-ton refueling truck from CSSD-28
            caught fire and was destroyed while on a refueling mission for Co F,
            2d LAI in the northern part of Sth Marines sector.
