NARRATIVE SUMMARY
January brought war! January also brought large numbers of
reservists to the unit. 80% of this unit's active duty 1391s and
1371s were pulled from the unit and reorganized into 7th
Engineers in order to directly support the move forward across
the Kuwait-Saudi border. Reservists, with one month of training
at Camp Pendleton came aboard to fill the 1391/1371 vacancies.
These reservists were a bridge unit recently designated bulk
fuelers. The two reserve officers are neither bulk fuel MOS
trained. One officer is a former artilleryman and the other a
communications man. Both are competent and all the reservists
are motivated. No problems have arisen. We kept an active duty
SNCO at each fuel farm to fill the platoon sergeant billet. We
also held 7 additional active duty Marines at each site to
provide some continuity. Bulk fuel continues to prove its
importance in supporting the war. We are averaging 400K gallons
issued per day at the Jubail farm. 60 fuel trucks offloading
fuel to the farm each day is not uncommon.
We continued to beef up the maintenance and supply sections,
mostly with reassigned active duty and a few reservists. Our
responsibility to support has continued to increase. The 3RD MAW
HO moved on base with MACS-3S bringing over 38 generators and 31
air conditioners alone. The increased maintenance burden is
proving to be challenging. Our Marines are working over time as
I am sure Marines are everywhere. I would like to have a few
more generator mechanics and One More air conditioner mechanic

and 2 have increased in importance since the beginning of the
war. Emphasis is of course now on the movement of large
quantities of ammunition and we are the only local maintenance
facility and therefore were tasked to push maintenance contact
teams to support the ASPS. I have sent a contact team every
single day and it has paid off big time. Maintenance has never
