NARRATIVE SUMMARY
TASKS AND MISSIONS
1. MISSION. On 06 September 1990, Marine Air Control Squadron
2 (MACS-2), arrived in The Kingdom of Saudi. Arabia and was
directed to establish a Tactical Air Operations Center (TAOC) in
.the vicinity of King Abdul Azii Naval Base (KAANB). MACS-2 was
tasked with the mission of providing a Base Defense Zone (BDZ) for
KAANB and the port facility",at,Jubayl. Additional missions
included advanced cuing ,for'the@HAWK and STINGER missile
battalions, surveillance f@r,@the MARCENT Area of Responsibility
(AOR) and traffic management in,and around KAANB and Jubayl
Airfield.
Although BDZ and t.raffic,,@anagement of airfields is not
doctrinally a mission@of the@TAOC, the TAOC performed this mission
until Marine air traffic control systems could be established at
these facilities to assume BDZ@and airfield traffic management
functions. As air int,erdictio@@h planning progressed, MACS-2
displaced forward to the.vicihity of Ras Al Mishab. On 29
December 1990 MACS-2, with personnel and equipment augmentation
from MACS-6 and personnel from. MACS-7, established a primary TAOC
eight miles due west of the Ras Al Misl)al) port:, harbor and
airfield complex.
In addition MACS-2 established an Early Warriirig/Cc)ntrol (EW/(@)
site with the capability to assume the primary functions of the
TAOC if called upon, 4nd cuel@'HAWK fire platoons and SJ'IN(F-R
missile teams. Utilizing these sites MACS-2 was able to provide
all functions of Anti.air Warf,@te (AAW) in support of USMARCF:N,R and
air and grotAnd@off6nsiv6@operati-ons. Specifically, the TAOC
provided air defense for the,@IMEF AOR wi.t@i priority of air defense
to the GCE, IMEF airfields, Command, Control- and Coinintini(,ations
(C3) nodes, and Combat Service Support ((,SS) areas.
MACS-2 and other supporting agencies accomplished by
activating an Integrated Air Defense System (TADS) utilizing HAWK
and STINGER missile assets from 2d LAAM Bri, 3d LAAM Rn, 2d J,AAO Flr)
(rein) and 3d LAAD Sn (-) (rein) and F'/A-1.8 fiq@itet qjrrrAft,
from Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11) popit.i.c,ried at
Airbase, Bahrain. On order, MACS-2 was to transition to off(?r)sjv,,
operations in support of operations to secure IMEF objectives.
Additionally MACS-2 supported multiple forward based ai.j-
operations by echeloni.ng an EW/C forward in support of the CCE.
Finally, MACS-2 prepared to assume the functions of an Alternate
Tactical Air Command Ci?nter iATACC)'during echelon operations or
if TACC or primary TAOC functions were lost or degraded.
