      were filled as the camp stayed at Yellow alert fu. the
      Ist half of the month. At 0300, on 17 January the coalition forces
      executed a massive air assault against IRAQI targets to include
      Bagdad, the Iraqi capital. On 20 January 1991 at 2140 the first of
      many air alarms sounded on Camp 5 indicating that SCUD missiles had
      been launched into Saudi Arabia and into our sector. Camp 5 reacted
      effec-E'Ively and efficiently during all alerts.

          The Group S-3 NBC Chief continued conducting a series of NBC
      Defense Courses. The primary objective was to ensure that all Marines
      within the SRI Group had all of the required NBC gear and training to
      conduct Offensive operations. On 5 January 1991, the Medical
      Department began issuing CANA autoinjectors and Pyridostigmine tablets
      and conducted a briefing on their use against NBC agents. On 12
      January all SRI units began receiving ANTHRAX injections for defense
      against this biological agent. On 16 January 1991, SRI Marines began
      taking CIPRO tablets to enhance NBC protective measures.

          A weekly Air conference at MAG-16 continued to be held every
      Wednesday until the 16th of January when the Group Air officer was
      recalled to MAG-16. Requested air support.for the following Sunday
      through Saturday were submitted and worked out at each conference.
      Capt R. A. Palena, S-3A and Capt B. K. Kragel, Air Officer, attended
      the weekly conference as representatives of lst SRI Group. Up until
      his departure, Capt Kragel greatly enhanced our capability to conduct
      air operations.

          During this period, organizational improvement, training and
      operations of the Camp 5 Area Guard continued. IstLt Watts, 2nd SRI
      Group, became the new Guard officer replacing Capt Hall. The area
      guard increased in size to 82 Marine Corps Personnel, divided into
l are rotated on a 30 day basis from
      units within the camp.

          Due to the displacement of the Commanding Officer and principal
      staff members, Major G. D. "Dusty" Rhoads, was assigned as the Camp
      Gray Commander with Major Mike O'Neil acting as his executive officer.
      Capt R. A. Palena continues to serve in the S-3 Section as the S-3B
      and CO, Headquarters Company (Fwd), Ist SRIG.
