PROPOSED CITATION
The President of the United States takes pleasure in
presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
LIEUTENANT COLONEL THOMAS S. JONES
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for services set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during
OPERATION DESERT STORM while serving as the Commanding Officer, let
Battalion(Rein), 6th Marines, 2d Marine Division, FMF in hostile action
in the Emirate of Kuwait from 24 February - 27 February 1991. Leading
his battalion against a numerically superior force, Lieutenant Colonel
Jones, without regard for his personal safety, exposed himself to enemy
artillery and mortar fire in order to direct the battalion's breach of
the enemy's heavily fortified defensive barrier. After establishing a
breach-head, Lieutenant Colonel Jones rapidly surveyed the battlefield
and realized his penetration placed his battalion at a significant
tactical advantage over enemy forces. He quickly unleashed a
devastating assault on the flank and rear of the enemy, skillfully
maneuvering his forces which resulted in destruction of two Iraqi
brigades and their division headquarters. His success enabled the 2d
Marine Division to pour follow-on forces through the breach and was
directly responsible for the division's overwhelming success. By the
end of offensive action on 27 February 1991 his battalion was
responsible for the destruction of two additional enemy brigades, over
120 enemy tanks and armored personnel carriers, over 60 enemy artillery
pieces, and the capture of over 3400 enemy prisoners of War. His daring
actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk,
Lieutenant Colonel Jones upheld the highest traditions of the United
States Naval Service."
For the President,
