M-6 MASK CARRIER
Discussion:
The carriers for the M-17 field protective mask experienced
almost immediate deterioration in the extreme temperatures and sandy
environment. Supply was unable to keep pace with the number of
carriers which were becoming unserviceable at such a rapid pace.
Recommendation%
Research and development should examine this gear to determined
why it deteriorated so rapidly. Re-enforcing the main carrier
strap at the point where it attaches to the mask case assembly.
Also discourage the practice of using the mask carrying strap as
a cartridge belt.
Topic:
M-1 CANTEEN DRINKING CAPS
Discussion:
During this deployment a large number of malfunctioning canteen
caps were encountered. The cause +or an 8% malfunction rate is
unknown, however these detective canteen caps were reported
and possibly exist throughout the rest of the Corps' inventory.
Recommendation:
This unit of gear will require an individual check by the user
upon issue.
Topic:
M-24 AIRCREW MASK
Discussion:
The a3.rcrew mask in the inventory prior to the start of operation
Desert Storm were given comprehensive test to ensure serviceability.
The test were conducted at Camp LeJeune in Dec. 1990. The mask
experienced an approximate 40% failure rate. The entire inventory
required a modification to the filter elements. The mask carrying
case does not adequately protect the mask assembly from the damage.
