Regiment and the US VII Corp~ headquarters, all deployed in
Germany;
- 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized) from Ft. Riley, Kansas;
- Other combat support and combat service support units from the
US and Europe;
- An additional Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) from Camp
Lejeune, North Carolina and its maritime pre-positioning ships
(MPS), and a Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) from Camp
Pendleton, California;
- An additional three carrier battle groups (CVBGs) centered
around the carriers USS Roosevelt, USS Ranger and USS America
and their escorts, as well as the battleship USS Missouri and its
battle group;
- An additional 14 fighter squadrons, 2 bomber squadrons, and 11
support squadrons of transport and aerial refueling aircraft that
will support multi-service operations.
In addition, Secretary Cheney ordered the call-up of three Army
National Guard units: the 48th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized) from
Georgia, the 155th Armored Brigade from Mississippi, and the 256th
Infantry Brigade (Mechanized) from Louisiana. After these units go
through an initial training period, they will either fill in behind active units
that have deployed to the Gulf or, possibly, be deployed themselves as part
of Operation Desert Shield.
Nor is this necessarily the end of our deployment effort. I will
continue to review the situation, in close consultation with the Saudis and
