         Monday     U.S. blockade of Iraqi shipping is criticized by U.N. Security Council
      members France, Canada, Soviet Union and Malaysia. (Washington Post, August. 14,

         Cost estimate for Operation Desert Shield as of August 13 is $14.6 million/per day.

         There are 10,000 U.S. ground troops in Saudi Arabia, and 20,000 saliors on more
      than 30 ships in Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf region. (New York

         Four   U.S.  carriers are in the Middle East  -- USS  ROOSEVELT,     USS
      INDEPENDENCE, and USS EISENHOWER are in the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea.
      USS SARATOGA is scheduled to arrive on August 14. A fifth carrier, USS KENNEDY,
      is being readied to leave Norfolk for Mediterranean. (New York Times, August 14, p.

         The Navy is dispatching to the Persian Gulf most of the 22 cargo ships it has
      prepositioned around the world with stores of equipment, ammunition and supplies for
      the Marines, Arniy and Air Force and is also activating its reserve cargo forces faster
      than ever before according to officials of the Militaay Sealift Command. At least 12 of
      the Navy's 96 Reserve ships, operated by civilian mariners have been activated.

         Tuesday --- President Bush warns King Hussein of Jordan that U.S. will blockade
      Jordanian ports if they provide transit for Iraqi commerce and further says that U. S. will
      provide financial aid to support Jordan in order to compensate for lost revenues.
