The Navy has deployed more than 35,000 of its people to the Middle East aboard
more than 40 ships with only a minimum of disruption to its personnel system, service
officials say. Naval Military Personnel Command "stood up" a crisis response center to
meet needs on a 24-hour-a-day basis. RADM Salvatore Gallo, Commander NMPC,
credits local Navy Reservists with helping to meet staffing requirements in the early days

Senator Sam Nunn, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, urges
President Bush to seek more involvement by Egyptian and other Arab troops in order to
strengthen ground forces in the region and to prevent the incident from becoming largely
