         Thursday --- U.S. officials have told Israel and its supporters in recent days that any
      Iraqi attack on Israel would set off a vigorous American response in support of Israel.

         The Emir of Kuwait, speaking before U.N. General Assembly, pleads for his
      country's liberation from Iraq, urges the U.N. to stand by sanctions and offers third
      world countries relief from their debts to Kuwait. When the Emir arrives at the General
      Assembly, the Iraqi delegation walks out. (New York Times, September 28, p. Al.)

         House Foreign Affairs Committee approves a resolution that endorses President
      Bush's handling of the Persian Gulf crisis, but carefully avoids giving him open-ended
      support for military action against Iraq. (New York Times, September 28, p. A6.)

         The Iraqi government backs off from its threat to execute diplomats who harbor
      civilians. (New York Times, September 28, p. A6.)

         Department of Defense releases the sixth (sic) list of U.S. Naval S-elected Reserve
      units to be ordered to active duty involving approximately 34 Naval Reservists.

September 28
         Friday --- Officials in the Defense Department and Congress are debating whether to
      call up combat reserve units to join the nearly 27,000 already called up who are
      performing primarily support roles. The main reason for the call-up is that many officials
      want to include combat reserves in rotation plans which are currently being drafted. Of
      the 27,000 reservists called up to date, Department of Defense officials say only three
      have failed to report. (New York Times, September 29, p. 4.)

         CIA reports disclosed to reporters by Representative I-es Aspin (D-Wisconsin) and
      confirmed by Administration officials reveal that Iraq has developed biological weapons
      that would be able to deliver significant quantities of deadly agents on the battlefield by
      early next year. (New York Times, September 29, p. 4.)

September 29
         Saturday --- Saudi Arabia plans to double the size of its armed forces to more than
      120,000 according to knowledgeable observers inside and outside the Kingdom. (Jane's
      Defence Weekly, September 29, p. 541.)


September 30
         Sunday --- Iraqi President Saddam Hussein says that Iraq would seek to open a
      "debate" with France over the Persian Gulf crisis, implying that Iraq may be willing to
