         Monday --- Following a meeting with British Prime Minister Thatcher in London,
      Secretary of Defense Cheney says that U.S. forces in Persian Gulf area were "in for the
      long haul." (N~ York Times, October 16, p. A9.)

         A White Paper is issued entitled "Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Reserve Components:
      Missing Lessons for a Future Forces Structure" by three members of the U.S. House of
      Representatives including the Armed Services Committee Chairman, Les Aspin (D-
      Wisconsin).   The report challenges the active services' reluctance to call-up Army
      Reserve and National Guard combat units.                         (Navy Times, November 5, p. 24.)

          USS   ELMER     MONTGOMERY                               completes 2,500th  intercept action by the
      multinational intercept       force.                 Intercept operations began August 12. (All Hands,
      December, p. 33.)

          Iraq  turned off its air       defense                  ra~1ar "several weeks ago" to prevent U.S.
      reconnaissance planes from monitoring the signals and then using the information to
      program U.S. electronic warfare equipment. (Washington Post, October 16, p. Al.)

         The Navy has called up 2,337 medical reservists and another 214 have volunteered
      to fill medical positions left vacant when active duty personnel were tasked to support
      Desert Shield. Services at some military hospitals were cut back, but most are building
      back up to normal levels rapidly. The services have not called up the full number of
      reservists permitted under the President's orders.                    (Navy Times, October 15, p. 46.)
