   Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney announces a suspension of news briefings at the Pentagon and

---In a W~~~~/ntonPosABC News Poll, 71 % of those questioned said the final U.S. objective of the
war with Iraq should be to force Saddam Hussein out of power, while 28 % said the goal should be to
drive Iraq out of Kuwait.  Two out of three say the conflict should end orily if Iraq leaves most of its
tanks, artillery and other weapons behind when it pulls out of Kuwait. (Washington Post, February 24,

   Iraq, in its first statement after allied troops launched a ground attack against Iraqi forces, declares
its army will bring disgrace to President Bush and destroy the allied forces.       (W~~n ton Post,

   British Prime Minister John Major says British forces would join the "massive ground attack."
French President Francois Mitterand gives the go ahead for French troops to enter the fighting.

   President Mikhail S. Gorbachev's spokesman says that Iraq had "lost the chance" to take advantage
of Moscow's mediating effort, but he said the Soviet Union still hoped that President Saddam Hussein
would "have the guts" to end the war by withdrawing promptly from Kuwait.          (New York Times,

   President Bush says "coalition forces have no alternative but to continue to prosecute the war."

   Only ten minutes before the deadline imposed by President Bush, Iraq fires a Scud missile into
Israel.  (New York Times, February 24, p. 1.)

---U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf theater exceed 533,000.  Seventy-four Scuds have been launched,
38 towards Saudi Arabia, 36 towards Israel.  The coalition has flown over 94,000 sorties.   Of the 98
Iraqi aircraft that have been de~~oyed, 42 were destroyed in air-to-air combat and 56 were destroyed
